Chapter Eleven

Maya

As my father walked away from the table, I stared at Nick. I couldn’t believe he was still here. I had seen the expression on his face when he walked in and saw my father sitting at the table with me. I had expected him to turn around and march straight out that instant, but no, he was still here – and I was even more confused than ever.

I could tell he wanted to interrogate me now that we were finally alone together, but he was as aware as I was that my father was just a few feet away. If he overheard us talking about anything real, it would be over – there would be no way we could hide what was going on, and I didn’t want my dad to know I was in any way involved with this man.

And yet, I could feel myself burning beneath his gaze. I’d felt it all night. Even as my father had shut me down and talked over me every time I had tried to say something, I had noticed him looking over at me, checking in on me, seeing how I was doing. Like he cared. Like he gave a shit.

I shouldn’t have been surprised at how my father had been acting, but I had hoped the fact I’d gotten him this meeting at all would earn me a little more respect. I had thought wrong. He had treated me as though I was nothing more than an annoyance, and I didn’t know what it would take for him to see me any other way.

At least I was here, right? Marco had tried to invite himself along, but I had managed to convince my dad to go with just me. When he’d agreed, I thought it was a sign that things were moving in the right direction – that he was finally starting to accept I might actually be useful in his business, as opposed to some fly buzzing around the outskirts of his life.

Maybe this was the start of it. I had to believe it was. I had to believe he wouldn’t treat me the same way he always had, after this. Surely, I would get a bit more respect now – a bit more involvement. Even though Nick had made it obvious he didn’t want anything else to do with our family, I had still managed to land this meeting...

But before I could overthink it anymore, Dad came back to the table.

"I’m sorry, I have a business matter to attend to," he told us. Nick raised his eyebrows at him.

"At this time of night?" he asked, pointedly. I could see Dad fidgeting with annoyance. He didn’t like it when people talked to him like that, but he quickly pushed it down again, clearly not wanting to piss off this potential ally.

"It’s urgent," he replied apologetically. "But I would love to meet with you again, Nick, give me a call whenever you want."

"I will," Nick replied, and he extended his hand to my father before he made his exit.
